Diary of a Vacation Reader
Some people wait all year for vacation. Some wait all year to dive into that stack of books. Our communications coordinator headed to Cuba with a library in his pocket.
There’s no luxury in an airport anymore – vacations start with lineups and waiting. My girlfriend Yuna didn’t even care – she took the time to read Marie Kondo's new bestseller about the magic of tidying Spark Joy.
We start in Varadero, home to many of Cuba's most beautiful beaches. Mojito in one hand, book in the other = heaven. If only I could get paid to do this.
Okay, enough sitting around. It's time to venture off the resort and into the big city. Havana -- the bustling, technicolour heart of Cuba.
The cars are amazing--candy-coloured classics from the 1940s and 1950s, burping black smoke as they cruise down the back alleys of La Habana Vieja. The old colonial buildings in various states of disrepair are breathtaking.
Yes we get lost a few times...
And hit a few deadends along the way.
But every wrong turn is a new adventure.
On the third day I felt inspired to learn more about Cuba so I downloaded The Island of Eternal Love by Daína Chaviano. The perfect place to read about the perfect place.
After three hectic (but amazing) days exploring the city, and several chapters down--Love, Style, Life by Garance Doré is our current obsession--it's back the beach for one last hurrah!
Thanks for the good times, Cuba. We'll be back soon...
