Kobo Q&A with Gena Showalter
With two new books just released (Twisted and Lord of the Vampires), Kobo had a chance to catch up to bestselling author Gena Showalter. Get the inside scoop on the new books and find out what Gena’s doing next.
Q: Paranormal romance fans can’t get enough of your dark, sexy Lords of the Underworld paranormal romance series. The eighth installment, The Darkest Surrender, goes on sale in October. How do you keep each book distinct from the one before?
A: I think the characters themselves make the books distinct. Each warrior has different strengths, different weaknesses (wow – each guy now wants to shake me for daring to utter the word “weakness” in conjunction with their magnificence), and different obstacles to overcome. Strider, the hero of The Darkest Surrender, is one of my favorites. (Yep, more shaking from the guys.) He has a warped sense of humor, doesn’t mind getting down and dirty when necessary –and even when not necessary—can’t lose a single challenge without severe consequences, and has a dark temper, but he’ll do absolutely anything to protect the ones he loves. And when he falls in love . . . watch out! His woman becomes his life.
Q: What’s in store for the Lords of the Underworld next?
A: Up next in the Lords of the Underworld saga is The Darkest Seduction, featuring Paris (coming in the spring of 2012 from HQN!). From the very beginning, Paris has been a reader favorite. He is the keeper of the demon of Promiscuity and he cannot sleep with the same woman twice. (Seriously. His demon won’t let him.) Well, except for one woman, but she’s dead. Or is she?
Q: Your first book from Harlequin Nocturne, Lord of the Vampires, is on sale now. It’s the first in the Royal House of Shadows series that will be continued by three other authors. Can you tell us about your vampire hero, Nicolai, as well as what it was like to work with other authors?
A: Nicolai is my most alpha hero to date. He wants what he wants and he’ll do anything to get it. He’s a vampire, yes, but he also has magic in his blood—and a consuming hunger for one woman. Working with Jill Monroe, Jessica Andersen and Nalini Singh was amazing! Together we plotted an evil blood sorcerer, a land filled with were-shifters and Berserkers, and gave our four royal siblings a purpose—saving their kingdom from the man who slaughtered their parents.
Q: You also write young adult fiction for Harlequin TEEN and have a new release, Twisted, book three of the Intertwined Novels, out right now. Can you tell us what this book and the series are about?
A: The series features Aden Stone, a teenage boy with four souls trapped inside his head. Everyone thinks he’s crazy, but the truth is he’s a magnet for the supernatural. Twisted opens a whole new world to Aden, full of danger like he’s never before known. And his girlfriend is growing weaker by the day! He doesn’t think life can get any worse—but I kind of prove him wrong.
