Call Jennifer Reeve Fowkes a super-fan.
She entered quick off the mark when we announced our “Have tea with Laini Taylor” contest, and ended up being our lucky winner, meeting Laini at the lovely Charlotte Street Hotel in London for high tea and a good chat with the author of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Days of Blood and Starlight.
Jennifer told us in her contest entry that she made "a loud squealing noise" when hearing about the contest. She also warned that "a lot of ridiculousness ensues" if she were to meet Laini.
This was a very accurate predicition because Jennifer and her guest had a lovely time with Laini. “It was so much fun to get to meet her (and have fancy afternoon tea!), she's so lovely,” Jennifer told us.
Laini Taylor is the author of the hugely popular fantasy series Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which follows Karou, a seventeen-year-old Prague art student. Karou was raised by chimaera, or creatures that have attributes of different animals and humans. The chimaera she lives with demand teeth in exchange for wishes and send Karou to fetch these teeth for them. Over time, Karou learns what the teeth are eventually used for and why there are rules such as "no baby teeth" and "no rotting". (Don’t worry, we won’t spoil the plot!)
Daughter of Smoke and Bone received extremely high reviews from critics such as Chelsey Philpot from The New York Times, and Universal Pictures has acquired the rights for a film adaptation.
