Samantha Young is a New York Times bestselling author of more than 19 contemporary and paranormal romance novels including the wildly popular On Dublin Street series.

Finding her inspiration in both her home country of Scotland and the world of music (she’s an indie rock afficianando with a penchant for The Killers, Arcade Fire, and The Black Keys), she has gathered a legion of adoring fans who relate to her dry humour, mad worlds, and heroes and heroines who sometimes do the saving and sometimes just need to be saved.

What books might we be surprised to find on your shelves?

I have a ton of YA books. Most people know me as an adult contemporary romance author, but I started writing young adult fiction first and I still love the books that come out in that reading group.

Where is your reading happy place?

I have this oversized chair in my bedroom that I just sink into. Everything but the pages disappear when I’m on that chair.

Who are your favourite heroes of fiction?

Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mocking Bird), Todd (The Knife of Never Letting Go, Patrick Ness), Dimitri (Vampire Academy series, Richelle Mead), Ender (Ender’s Game, Orson Scott Card), and Paul Edgecombe (The Green Mile, Stephen King). There are too many to name. I could go on and on!

What was your favourite book as a child?

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Who are your favorite fiction writers working today? Patrick Ness, Suzanne Collins, Richelle Mead, Mia Sheridan, Colleen Hoover, Penny Reid, Karen Marie Moning, Moira Young and so many more!

Typewriter, laptop, or pen & paper?

I start with pen and paper for my notes and then I move onto my laptop for the actual writing of the book.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I don’t have a particularly favorite place to write. I usually end up writing wherever is quiet in the house!

How do you choose your characters names?

I usually have an idea of what kind of name will suit the character so I often look up baby name websites until that right name jumps out at me.

What word or expression do you most overuse?

There’s not one particular phrase or word that I overuse, but it did take me a while to get out of the habit of overusing adverbs!

Do you listen to music while you write? What’s on your playlist?

I listen to music while I’m writing notes and chapter summaries. My playlist is massive and includes music from bands like The Killers, Carolina liar, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Naked & the Famous, Silversun Pickups, Biffy Clyro, The Kooks, Pearl Jam, Imagine Dragons, Metric, MS MR, Kings of Leon, Echosmith, Florence + the Machine, Bastille, The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Alex Winston, Ingrid Michaelson, The National, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, Matchbox Twenty.

What do all writers have in common?

Uncontrollable day-dreaming at inappropriate times… i.e. mentally plotting out a new book idea when you’re supposed to be performing maid of honour duties.

Which natural gift would you most like to possess?

Being a good cook!

What’s your idea of a wild night out?

Not remembering it.

If you could revisit yourself at any age, what age would you choose?

My late teens.

What’s your favourite drink? Last supper?

Laurent Perrier champagne. Yes please!

TV show?

Game of Thrones
